Sentence Pacing FAQs
>
What is sentence pacing and why does it matter?
Sentence pacing is the rhythm created by varying sentence lengths throughout your writing. Monotonous pacing (all short or all long sentences) bores readers. Varied pacing keeps readers engaged and improves comprehension. This tool visualizes your rhythm as a color-coded bar chart. Write better sentences →
+
What do the colors mean?
Green = short sentences (1–8 words), Blue = medium (9–18 words), Amber = long (19–30 words), Red = very long (31+ words). Click any bar to see the full sentence and get feedback like "very long — consider splitting."
+
What is a good average sentence length?
For most audiences, 15–25 words is ideal. Under 15 feels choppy; over 25 feels dense. The tool calculates your average and flags it in the verdict grid. Technical writing often trends higher; fiction and journalism often trend lower. Why shorter sentences win →
+
How is rhythm judged?
The tool uses standard deviation of sentence lengths and detects runs of consecutive same-length sentences. High variation + short runs = "varied rhythm." Long runs of similar lengths = "monotonous." A standard deviation under 3 with many same-length runs is flagged as "very uniform."
+
How do I improve my sentence rhythm?
Mix short punchy sentences with longer explanatory ones. Break up very long sentences (red bars) into two or three shorter sentences. Add a short sentence after a long paragraph to give the reader a breath. Aim for a visual pattern of varied bar lengths in the chart.
